8 Questions the 'Game of Thrones' Finale Still Needs to Answer [SPOILERS]
This story includes spoilers for 'Game of Thrones' Season 8.
It’s hard to believe there’s just one episode left of HBO’s beloved series Game of Thrones, but here we are. After the most recent episode “The Bells” fully unleashed Daenerys Targaryen's Mad Queen, we have a ton of questions regarding the consequences that will follow. But beyond what will happen to Dany, there are still plenty of plot points from the show’s run that need to be at least addressed in the finale. Here are eight questions that absolutely need answers in the final show.
1. Where Will Jon and Daenerys End Up?
We saw firsthand in the latest episode that Jon Snow was betrayed by Daenerys. After a very awkward scene between the lovers earlier on, we see the Mother of Dragons then go against her word and burn down King’s Landing, murdering innocent people in the process. So what’s going to happen between the pair now? There’s no way Dany is still Jon’s queen after her actions, so we’ll have to get a definitive answer as to where he stands with her now.
2. Who, if Anyone, is the Prince That Was Promised?
The prophesied Prince That Was Promised, an idea Melisandre carried throughout the series, has been predicted by both fans and characters to be a handful of different people. Whether it’s meant to be Jon, Daenerys, or even Arya Stark, The One Who Was Promised is destined to save the world from an “impending darkness.” After Dany’s cruel actions in “The Bells,” we might need someone to fulfill this, if it hasn’t been done already.
3. Will Arya Fulfill the Rest of Her Prophecy?
This season’s Battle of Winterfell in the episode “The Long Night” concluded with Arya taking out the Night King, something we realized she was meant to do all along. Melisandre returned and repeated the same prophecy to the trained assassin from the third season, “Brown eyes, blue eyes, green eyes. Eyes you’ll shut forever,” leaving her with just one more person to kill after the undead leader. As Cersei Lannister has green eyes, fans had been theorizing that Arya would be the one to kill her. However, with the Queen ultimately meeting her demise in a much less satisfying way last episode, there’s still someone out there with green eyes for Arya to defeat. Will it be Daenerys, who has green-blue eyes? We need to find out if Arya will complete her prophecy.
4. What Happened to Yara?
Yara Greyjoy seemed to be pretty essential to Daenerys’ fight for the Iron Throne, as Theon Greyjoy explained earlier on in the season that his sister went to take back the Iron Islands in Dany’s name. While her going Mad Queen proved Daenerys didn’t need to recruit Yara and her troops, we’d still like to see a proper goodbye for the ironborn. Now that her uncle, Euron Greyjoy, is dead, Yara might not have any reason to return. But we still need an explanation.
5. Will Anyone From Previous Seasons Return?
Among the countless fan theories around the final season has been speculation on which characters from previous seasons would return. Many have argued that Daario Naharis, Daenerys’ former lover who we last saw in the sixth season, would be back to fight for her, along with theories that Jaqen H'ghar would emerge again. Nearly all of the remaining characters have people from their past that would result in a game-changer if they returned, so we need to know if it’s possible.
6. Why Was Jon Brought Back From the Dead?
The reason why Melisandre believed Jon was the Prince That Was Promised was because she was able to bring him back from the dead through the Lord of Light in the sixth season. Beyond just religion, however, it's seemed obvious that Jon was brought back for a reason. With just one episode left, we absolutely need to know what that reason was, because it couldn’t have just been luck.
7. What Was the Point of the Night King?
A common complaint about this season is regarding the Night King, and how little he amounted to after seasons of buildup. The undead leader and his army were supposed to be the greatest threat in Westeros history, one that even brought together the most unlikely of characters. But after Arya killed him in “The Long Night,” he was never spoken about again, nor was Bran Stark’s connection with him. We’re going to need some type of explanation, or at least a mention about the Night King.
8. Who Will Sit on the Iron Throne?
And of course, the biggest question in the show’s run has come down to the finale. Who will sit on the Iron Throne, if anyone? With Daenerys’ poor choices in “The Bells” possibly moving her even further away from the throne, it seems Jon is the only logical option to take it. But we all know how much he doesn’t want it. We’re going to need to find out if another person will rise up and somehow earn claim to the throne, or if Jon will put his feelings aside for the greater good.
