Alice Marie Johnson Defends Kim Kardashian After Facing Backlash Over Shapewear Ad
In a move fans didn't see coming, Kim Kardashian featured Alice Marie Johnson in an ad for her new line, SKIMS Solutionwear. Many will remember Johnson, as she was the woman serving a life sentence for a first time, nonviolent crime, who Kim convinced President Trump to pardon. Soon after the reality star made a visit to the White House, Alice was a free woman.
With that incredible background, Kardashian asked Johnson to be in an ad for a campaign to have real women talk about how the line empowers them to be their best selves. In the video, Johnson says of Kardashian, "She went to war for me, to fight for my freedom. That’s why I call her my war angel, because nothing stood between her and my freedom."
Many fans applauded Johnson's ad and felt it to be uplifting. One user wrote on the Instagram post, "Kim!!!! This is major. Beautiful, heartfelt story. So happy for Ms. Alice! Ms. Alice you look absolutely beautiful and you’re nothing short of amazing! Fly free Ms. Alice and live abundantly blessed."
Another said, "Kim I will love you forever for helping her and the others you will in the future." A third called it the "best project ever."
However, other users felt the ad was inappropriate. One complained, "Shapewear makes her feel free? My god, fire the whole team." Others felt it was exploitative. One user wrote, "Kinda not cool... to use this women’s story to sell spanx" with a crying emoji.
Well, as reported by NY Daily News, Alice clapped back at all the trolls, saying how insulted she was that people didn't consider the fact that she decided for herself to be in the ad. She took to Twitter to set the record straight.
It seems like there's never-ending drama around Kim's shapewear line. First it was the name "Kimono," which got shut down for cultural appropriation of the Japanese garment. Now there's the uproar about Alice. But on the whole, fans and social media users seemed positive and open to her appearance. We totally loved it.
