'Avengers: Endgame' Wins Best Movie at MTV Movie & TV Awards
By Ryan Carroll
Avengers: Endgame has achieved nearly unparalleled success since it hit theaters in April, earning critical acclaim and grossing over $2.7 billion (and growing) at the box office. Its massive success will certainly earn it some mention at this year's major awards shows--and while the official awards season has yet to roll around, the film has already netted its first major award, winning Best Movie at the MTV Movie & TV Awards.
Accepting the award was co-director Anthony Russo, who, according to the BBC, said that “A movie like this one is only possible because it's been built on the shoulders of so much great work, so many talented artists and storytellers stretching back decades and generations now.” He added that this legacy reaches “All the way back to its origins with the late, great Stan Lee.”
The MTV Movie & TV Awards, which was televised last night, determined winners based on online polls taken by the general public. In competition with Avengers: Endgame included BlacKkKlansman, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, To All the Boys I've Loved Before, and Us. Also winning for their contributions to Endgame were Josh Brolin and Robert Downey Jr., who respectively won Best Villain and Best Hero for playing Thanos and Iron Man.
Meanwhile, HBO’s Game of Thrones won the award for Best TV Show, while the awards for best performances were nabbed by Lady Gaga for her role in A Star is Born and Elisabeth Moss for Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale.
We’re glad to see Endgame get the recognition it deserves--while many of the major Hollywood awards are still months away, we’re excited to see the film be recognized for its achievement as a cultural artifact.
