'Captain Marvel' Co-Director Reveals Another Idea They Had for Nick Fury Losing His Eye
By Hannah Wigandt
When you think of eyepatches, many might've pictured a pirate previously, but not any longer thanks to Marvel's Nick Fury. Fury's eyepatch has become a staple for the character's iconic look in the MCU, but when Captain Marvel premiered, we got to see a patch-less Fury and it was strange to say the least.
Fury has certainly been a rock for the Avengers throughout the MCU films. And with his black coat, gun, and eyepatch, he's always had a cool, menacing vibe.
So naturally it wouldn't be a surprise if his patch was the result of fighting some gruesome villains, but as Captain Marvel proved, that wasn't the case. Fans found out exactly what happened to Fury to lose his eye, and the culprit was Carol Danvers' cat Goose.
But according to Captain Marvel's co-director, Ryan Fleck, there were other options on the table for the way Fury lost his eye.
"There were definitely a lot of discussions and that was not the first idea on the table," Fleck told Comic Book Movie. "You're probably going to ask me what some of the other ideas were and I don't know if I can tell you that, not because I'm hiding anything, but because there were just so many absurd ideas we had. There was a strong contender for a while that a fight with the Skrulls seemed like the most obvious choice but then the more we thought about it, it just became too obvious."
While having Goose scratch Fury's eye out proved anticlimactic for fans, there was a reason for that.
"Since this is just as much Nick Fury's origin story as Captain Marvel's, we thought that it would be a fun piece of his backstory that moving forward, he was creative a new narrative for himself that he didn't really talk about," Fleck continued. "But he was fine with people wanting to muse about a potentially more serious way he could have lost his eye."
Co-director Anna Boden jumped in, adding, "Yeah, he didn't go around flaunting that he basically got a cat scratch!"
