This story includes spoilers for 'Stranger Things' Season 3.

The TV love letter to the 1980s, a.k.a. Netflix's Stranger Things, has exceeded viewers' expectations once again. Season 3 is a hit on so many levels--with one unexpected way being the portrayal of Billy Hargrove, who would've been a traditional villain were it not for a very humanizing scene in the final episode of the season.

In an interview with Bustle, actor Dacre Montgomery discussed his time playing the complicated character. "The thing that makes Billy interesting is that he's in a gray area, because we meet him and we see an antagonist, [but] we finally get to see a human by the end of the season," he said.

The moment that shifts our perception of Billy is when he defends Eleven against the monster possessing him, showing almost superhuman strength in his ability to overcome what has taken over his mind.

"When I put her down on the ground, it was just so emotional," Montgomery explained of filming with Millie Bobby Brown (Eleven). "We were screaming at each other and crying... we [were] just absolutely bawling our eyes out." He also called the scene "the most rewarding for the whole season."

Instead of playing a flat villain, Montgomery got to show multiple sides to his character, flipping the audience's expectations and giving viewers the complex experience of human weakness, as well as resiliency and even heroism. Billy will be missed.
