One of the most captivating mysteries in the Star Wars sequel trilogy has been that of Rey (Daisy Ridley)’s parentage. A wide variety of fan theories have attempted to address the question of who they are, though there has been little indication one way or the other--which made it even more confounding when The Last Jedi claimed they were not important. This week, however, a new wrinkle in the story emerged when Ridley teased the upcoming film The Rise of Skywalker.

In an interview with USA Today, Ridley said when asked about Rey's parents, “[Director J.J. Abrams] did say the question is answered. So at the end of the film, you do know what the dealio is.”

While The Last Jedi flummoxed viewers' expectations by having Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) reveal that Rey’s parents were nobodies, fans still postulated that there could be more to the reveal. Some argued that Kylo was lying to Rey, while others even went so far as to assert that Rey was a clone.

The mystery, along with the origin of Supreme Leader Snoke and the nature of the Knights of Ren, has puzzled viewers since the premiere of The Force Awakens in 2015. The question marks the latest iteration of director Abrams’ “mystery box” technique, which focuses viewers’ attention on a particular enigma without the film necessarily having a ready answer.

As for us, we’re beyond excited to see how the reveal plays out when The Rise of Skywalker hits theaters on Dec. 20 of this year.
