Fan Discovers Early Newspaper Review of 'The Office' and It's Not Pretty
By Rachel Reed
We all get it wrong from time to time. And sometimes, we get it very, very wrong. Unfortunately for one writer, they got it pretty incorrect in print and so naturally, their 2005 review is now up on Reddit for the world to see. Awkward!
This early review of The Office, which user eternalrefuge86 just posted, came from TV Guide. At the time, it predicted the mega hit to be a flop waiting to happen. If nobody stopped the author from writing this blasphemy, does it mean that others agreed? The person called Michael Scott "an unlikable loser" that no one would watch. Little did they know just how high he could fly!
When The Office debuted 15 years ago, arguably the biggest concern everyone voiced was that it couldn't compare to the British version. More specifically, fans of the original wondered who the heck could they find to fill the shoes of Ricky Gervais. Inevitably, Greg Daniels and company made it their own and the rest is TV history.
But as you can see in the clipped review below, posted by Twitter user @RetroNewsNow and then shared on Reddit, the writer believed not only was this task beyond impossible, but that the show's creators had already failed out the gate, saying, "Few will be inclined to stay tuned." For a show full of iconically cringe-worthy moments, this review might take the cake!
Throughout the series, the crew fine tuned little kinks and Michael Scott did evolve. But today, fans of The Office everywhere continue to have the last laugh. Not only was the show a hit in its hay day, but it consistently gains traction every time fans tune in for yet another binge session. We can't wait to hear what the cast thinks of this prediction if and when we finally get that reunion.
