Gal Gadot, Mark Ruffalo, and More Stars Face Backlash After Singing 'Imagine' to Help During Coronavirus Crisis
As more and more people across the world are being affected by Coronavirus, it's true that most of us just wish we could all come together to try and get through the pandemic as a united force. While zoos are hosting live streams for us to watch at home, people are donating to relief funds, and big-name celebrities are pledging their time and money, it looks like many are fortunately stepping up to help as best as they can. So when people in power don't use their platform the best way, it's bound to disappoint and spark backlash. Exhibit A: Gal Gadot's latest effort to ease the pain.
The Wonder Woman star likely only had good intentions when she enlisted the likes of fellow actors Mark Ruffalo, Amy Adams, Natalie Portman, Will Ferrell, and many more for a video, however it kind of fell flat with people who are actually suffering from the crisis. Gadot posted the clip, as seen below, to Instagram, which shows a collection of A-listers singing to John Lennon's "Imagine." As sweet as it is, many are saying it's just not enough, and instead is just in poor taste.
While many celebrities commented on the post gushing over how beautiful it was, others weren't as impressed. One wrote, "Everyone in this video can afford to sit this [crisis] out while the rest of us are in danger of losing our homes, jobs, access to healthcare, etc. But hey, at least they got together to sing this tune to 'comfort' us. What a contribution! I feel better already," adding an eye rolling emoji and the hashtag, "#EatTheRich."
Another commented, "This is so f**king offensive to so many people, just a solid slap in the face that every single one of these celebrities who participated in the video have the ability to help financially TREMENDOUSLY but go on and do stupid s**t like this and sing songs ARE YOU KIDDING ME??"
A third added, "I love seeing millionaires sing to us about how the world is going to get better. [Y'all] really on another dimension."
The discussion also turned to Twitter, where people are already posting memes about how tone deaf the video is. "Bad things happen when celebrities can’t work," one person joked, while another wrote, "This is the most cursed video I have ever seen LMAO why would [Gal Gadot] think this was a good idea."
Clearly, the general public is not amused with this act of so-called help. We'll be curious to see which celebs follow in the footsteps of Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds, who are donating $1 million to food banks in the U.S. and Canada, along with other stars who are actively doing their part to help those in need.
