'Game of Thrones' Lands Top Spot of Most Tweeted About TV Shows in 2019
The final season of Game of Thrones caused both praise and uproar on all social media platforms, but many diehards used Twitter as their main mode of processing the often disturbing events (looking at you, Khaleesi). According to the platform, this happened so much, in fact, that the HBO hard-hitter has become the most tweeted about series in 2019.
Forbes reports that the Emmy-winning show beat out the Netflix fan-favorite Stranger Things, as well as The Simpsons, for the top spot. The remainder of the list is as follows: La Casa De Papel (Money Heist), Grey's Anatomy, Love Island, Catfish: The TV Show, Family Guy, The Walking Dead, and Narcos.
Though it won the gold for this particular list, GoT was surprisingly snubbed for Golden Globe nominations, with Kit Harington receiving the only nod for his role as the brooding Jon Snow. They also recently received three noms at the SAG Awards, and will be competing with Stranger Things in each category.
The Twitter researchers didn't specify whether the majority of the tweets were positive or negative, but one can likely guess the latter. Season 8 of GoT was the most divisive in the show’s history, even provoking over a million fans to sign a petition for it to be remade with “competent writers.”
GoT might not be walking away with as many accolades this year, but at least the showrunners know that fans and followers just can’t stop talking about them.
