'Game of Thrones' Alum Natalie Dormer Says David Benioff and D.B. Weiss Had an 'Impossible Task' Ending the Show
Natalie Dormer has gotten to play some pretty amazing characters over the course of her acting career. She is even part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (anyone remember the sultry Private Lorraine from Captain America?), and is rumored to appear in the next season of The Witcher on Netflix. But at the end of the day, the actress is probably best known for her role as Margaery Tyrell on Game of Thrones, and in a recent interview with Variety, she spoke about her time on the show.
“I got the golden ticket, the perfect length of time. I watched Season 1 as a fan, came in the second season, did a good solid five years just as the show had this incredible explosion, and then I got out in time to watch the end and sit on the couch again,” the actress explained.

If you were a fan of the fantasy series, chances are you know how the show ends. I admit I am a Thrones fan, and like many viewers I found the conclusion fairly anticlimactic. Fans were so upset over the storytelling decisions made by showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss that after the final episode aired there was even a petition going around demanding that Season 8 be remade with "competent writers." However, according to Dormer, followers of the series would have been disappointed no matter the outcome.
Thrones fans will recall Margaery's explosive final scene when the character met a swift death after the Sept of Baelor was rigged with a bomb made from wildfire, an incredibly volatile green substance created by the pyromancers of the Alchemist's Guild. Dormer knew of her character's demise a year in advance. “I was ever so grateful that I was with Jonathan [Pryce who played the High Sparrow]. To have such a partner for my last scene was really a gift,” she told Variety. “But I think Dan [Weiss] and David [Benioff] had an almost impossible task in wrapping up the show. And by the very nature of the sheer quantity of storylines and characters, they had to start wrapping up around Season 6, which they did with the Tyrells and other beloved characters. It was almost going to be the impossible task, I think, regardless of what they had done, to satisfy a third act for everyone in the time that they had."
No matter how the show ended, Dormer's portrayal of Margaery Tyrell was fabulous and I would rewatch the show just for her awesome outfits. Hopefully House Tyrell is growing strong under King Bran the Broken! And if you're in need of more Dormer content, she currently stars in Penny Dreadful: City of Angels, streaming on Showtime.
