'Game of Thrones' Showrunner D.B. Weiss Was Apparently 'Pissed' About That Dark Episode Too
By Ryan Carroll
There were more than a few controversies that emerged from the final season of Game of Thrones, but one of the biggest came from the climactic episode “The Long Night,” when fans were unable to see the battle due to the dark cinematography. Surprisingly, it recently came out that the event caused frustration not just for fans but for those behind the camera as well, with star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau saying that co-showrunner D.B. Weiss was “pissed” about the poor lighting.
According to CinemaBlend, Coster-Waldau shared in an interview at Con of Thrones 2019 that the darkness of the episode was frustrating for Weiss. “I actually spoke to Dan Weiss about this, because it really pissed him off as well,” the actor said. “'Cause you’ve gotta believe me, they did everything they could to make this the most exciting action sequence ever made, put on film, TV, anything. So to wake up and see the Twitter or whatever talking about, ‘I can’t see it!' Seriously, it was a surprise to everyone.”
Previously, Thrones cinematographer Fabian Wagner determined that the episode was so dark likely because the data compression involved in the streaming process caused the brightness and color to be altered, meaning that what viewers watched on their computers didn’t look the same as what Weiss and the rest of the team saw when they finished production.
As for us, we can imagine why Weiss would be so agitated by the whole thing--we certainly have our fair share of criticisms for Game of Thrones’ final season, but it must be frustrating when technical issues mess with your creative vision.
