Game of Thrones series creators D.B. Weiss and David Benioff have been slightly M.I.A. after the divisive final season of the HBO show aired earlier this year. They have stayed quiet through the petitions, protests, and pointed remarks about their mistakes…including leaving the infamous coffee cup on a table in front of Emilia Clark (Daenerys Targaryen).

But now, the directors are finally surfacing to talk about the record-breaking season. CinemaBlend reports that Weiss and Benioff recently sat down with BS10 Star Channel, and shared what happened with the coffee cup scandal.

Benioff started the response lightheartedly, saying, “It's like, you know, I think in Persian rugs, it’s tradition that you make a little mistake when making the rug, because only God can do anything perfect. So for us I guess that just was our [mistake].”

Weiss jumped in, “That’s why I put the coffee cup there. Conscious, concerted statement of our imperfection.” Then Benioff finally and honestly responded:

“We were concentrating so much on Daenerys and Jon Snow that we just didn’t see this coffee cup right in the middle. So, at first I couldn’t believe it, and then it was embarrassment. 'How did we not see this coffee cup in the middle of the shot?’ And then, eventually, it was just kind of funny. This one is just a mistake, and it’s kind of funny to us now.”

Though they have found a way to get over the coffee cup incident, the two showrunners didn’t express if and how they are dealing with all the fan criticism about the last season. Hopefully they are finding a way to laugh through that, as well.
