'Game of Thrones' Stars Are Reuniting to Play Dungeons & Dragons for a Good Cause
A few stars of Game of Thrones will be reuniting to venture into a fantastical land beyond Westeros. An exclusive report from Entertainment Weekly reveals that five of the actors will be playing a virtual game of Dungeons & Dragons to raise money for charity. Daniel Portman (Podrick Payne), Gemma Whelan (Yara Greyjoy), Iwan Rheon (Ramsay Bolton), Kristian Nairn (Hodor), and Natalia Tena (Osha) will be coming together for D&D Live 2020: Roll w/ Advantage, a series of virtual Dungeons & Dragons games featuring celebrities put on to fundraise for Red Nose Day, an event that raises money to end child poverty.
For those who don't know, Dungeons & Dragons is a fantasy role playing game that allows each player to create their own character. D&D game designer Kate Welch will serve as Dungeon Master for the GOT actors on a campaign that follows a group of heroes who, "meet an unusual creature that sets them on a strange task. Seems simple enough — but in a realm legendary for its danger, all is not what it seems." The quest will take place over video chat Saturday, June 20 at 12 p.m. PT/3 p.m. ET.
Welch says she has created a campaign that will be unfamiliar terrain for the actors, who are used to the outrageous violence and plot twists on Game of Thrones. “The games I run tend to be ridiculous and goofy, which are two words I wouldn’t apply to Game of Thrones, necessarily," Welsh wrote to EW over email. "Super excited to see how these actors in particular let loose with the antics you typically find at a D&D table.”
Teasing what to expect from his D&D character, Ramsay Bolton actor Iwan Rheon said that he wanted to create something totally different from his Thrones character. "It's not all about brawl, man," he shared. "You gotta think your way through problems. Not like Ramsay Bolton, probably. Not gonna be very useful." Even if you are unfamiliar with Dungeons & Dragons, it will be great to see what the actors come up with, and you'll be supporting a great cause in the process!
