It's not hard to see how similar Game of Thrones is to The Lord of the Rings. Both fantasy franchises take place in mythical places with mythical creatures, feature gruesome battles, and include characters destined to be king. Plus, there's no doubt that A Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin was influenced by LotR author J.R.R. Tolkien while writing his series. And now there's one more thing that they'll have in common: their writers.

According to Martin himself, Game of Thrones writer Bryan Cogman will be working on the new Lord of the Rings series set to premiere on Amazon.

In Martin's recent blog post, he discussed the future projects the cast and crew of Thrones are signed on for now that the hit HBO series is finished.

"Let me say this much — last night was an ending, but it was also a beginning," he wrote. "Nobody is retiring any time soon. David and Dan are going on to Star Wars and other projects beyond that. Amazon scooped up Bryan Cogman, and put him to work on developing shows of his own, as well as helping out on their big Tolkien project."

Variety confirmed Martin's statement, but Amazon has yet to respond. It wouldn't be surprising if Martin's claim was true, though. As Cogman gained a ton of experience working on Thrones, it would make him a likely candidate for future fantasy shows.
