How Gwendoline Christie and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau Reacted to Their Big 'GoT' Scene [SPOILERS]
By Olivia Montine
This story includes spoilers for 'Game of Thrones' Season 8, Episode 4, "The Last of the Starks."
If your heart shattered into a million little pieces at the sight of Ser Brienne of Tarth crying over Jaime Lannister in last night's episode of Game of Thrones, you aren't alone.
Gwendoline Christie, the actress behind the recently-knighted warrior, opened up to Entertainment Weekly about what it was like to read the scenes between her and Jaime in the latest episode, which also included their very first love scene.
"I felt it was important to see a moment of choice from Brienne where she chooses to do this," Christie said of her feelings about the love scene's place in her character's arc. "Brienne is a virgin. As far as we know, Brienne hasn’t had a sexual or romantic encounter before. In the books, the character sleeps in her armor to protect herself. It’s important that she choose to explore life in that way and have that experience."
She continued to say that when her co-star, Nikolaj Waldau-Coster, found out about the sex scene, they began the conversation about it in the most 2019 way possible. "I received a text from [Jaime actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau] just laughing. I sent back a being sick emoji. How modern."
Christie also said the two had to set some ground rules going into filming for the sex scene. "There had to be a few conversations: 'Now you’re going to need to be very professional about this…' But I care for the character so deeply so it was important to me that it was taken care of well and I believe it was," the actress explained.
Finally, the actress said she felt for fans' pain at the pivotal moment where Jaime rides away for King's Landing after Brienne begs him to stay. " I was so upset for her," Christie said. "I know it’s just a character and I’m an actor who’s lucky to do her job. It’s so heartbreaking. But it’s life isn’t it? Life is heartbreaking. I never assumed they would be together. I didn’t think that would happen. And now I can feel a million hearts breaking."
We'll have to see where this storyline takes us next when the fifth episode of Game of Thrones Season 8 premieres on Sunday.
