Jenna Fischer Details One Joke Cut From 'The Office' Episode 'Diversity Day'
If you're a fan of The Office, chances are you remember the rather offensive episode "Diversity Day" from the first season. This is when Dwight walks around with the words "Asian" taped to his forehead and Michael urges Pam to "stir the melting pot." Not to mention when Pam uncomfortably tells Dwight that he might not be a very good driver and Dwight moans, "Oh man! Am I a woman?"
Yup, that episode, which could likely never fly if it was filmed today. Well, on the new podcast Office Ladies, in which Jenna Fischer (who played Pam Beesly) and Angela Kinsey (who played Angela Martin) recount each episode and share behind-the-scenes facts, Fischer recalled how there was another uncomfortable moment in "Diversity Day" that was ultimately cut.
According to CinemaBlend, Fischer shared:
"So you remember earlier in the episode when Mr. Brown starts his training, he explains what a HERO is? And it’s an acronym. And then Dwight explains what he thinks a HERO is? Well, after all of that happened, there was a scene where Michael stands up and creates his own acronym for SENSITIVITY and his words are: Inclusion, New attitude, Colorblind, Expectations, Sharing, and Tolerance. And while he’s saying these words, Dwight is writing them on a whiteboard and I look at the whiteboard and I say ‘Michael, that spells INCEST.’"
Fischer added what the conclusion to the epic moment would've been, continuing with:
"And then Steve tap dances and says ‘But it still works because incest is bad and discrimination is bad, but also incest is something that happens in your family and the world is our family…’ It’s just this crazy ramble. But he won’t let it go. And then Pam has a talking head that says ‘If he just rearranged the words, he could have spelled INSECT.’"
This joke seems relatively tame compared to some of the one-liners included in the episode, but it's hilarious to hear of what could've been nonetheless.
