Jeremy Renner Calls Out Sony and Asks for Spider-Man to Be Brought Back to MCU
By Ryan Carroll
The news of Spider-Man’s departure from the Marvel Cinematic Universe has sent ripples through the comic book film world, with fans, directors, and actors all speaking out on the shocking turn of events. Yesterday, another figure stepped up to share his thoughts: Jeremy Renner, who called out Sony and asked for Spider-Man to be brought back to the MCU.
Per ComicBook.com, Renner made the remark in an Instagram post on Tuesday, writing, “Hey @sonypictures we want Spider-Man back to @therealstanlee and @marvel please, thank you #congrats #spidermanrocks #? #please.” The photo itself shows Renner as Hawkeye in Avengers: Endgame, crouching mournfully in a pool of water.
The whole fiasco came out yesterday, when it emerged that Sony had rejected a deal from Marvel’s owner, Disney, to split the financing and profits of Spider-Man films 50-50, as opposed to Disney’s current 5% deal. While Sony owns the film rights to the Spider-Man character, Disney has essentially borrowed the character in order to feature him in the Marvel Cinematic Universe--though it owns the lucrative merchandise rights to the character, which, according to Deadline, is a major reason for Sony rejecting the deal.
With Sony’s rejection, Spider-Man and actor Tom Holland--who is slated for two more appearances as the character--seem to be out of the MCU for the time being. Following the controversy, Sony released a statement that placed the blame on Disney and Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige, though this has done little to quell fan frustration.
In any case, we’re curious to see how this issue develops--while we’re not sure that Renner’s plea will be the straw that breaks the camel’s back, the continuing outrage will be interesting to watch.
