Joe Russo Says Gay MCU Character Will Be Announced 'Pretty Soon'

It looks like the lack of LGBTQ representation in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is starting to come to an end. Despite how much success the MCU has achieved with its films, one of the only problems fans have had with them is their lack of diversity. But the co-director of Avengers: Endgame, Joe Russo, just teased we may be seeing a new gay character sooner than we thought.
Phase 3 of the MCU brought upon movies like Black Panther, which saw the first leading African American superhero to Marvel, and Captain Marvel, which featured Marvel's first leading female superhero. Both movies were an enormous successes, as Captain Marvel made over a billion dollars, while Black Panther earned an Oscar nomination for Best Picture.
These films started a positive change in the MCU that thankfully doesn't look to be stopping. Now, Black Widow is getting her own standalone film, and the first Asian-led Marvel movie, Shang-Chi, is reported to be in the works as well.
In a recent interview with SiriusXM, Russo addressed the next new character. "There is a gay character coming up in one of their films," Russo revealed. "I think Kevin [Feige] will make that announcement, I'm sure, pretty soon."
There's been a lot of speculation about which Marvel character they'll choose to play this openly gay character, but some, according to Screen Rant, believe it could be Hercules from the Eternals, who has been portrayed as gay in recent comic depictions.
Even though the MCU films clearly haven't been too welcoming in regards to gay characters, the comics have, so the studio will have many of characters to choose from.
