Kanye West is Reportedly Launching a Sunday Service Clothing Line
By Ryan Carroll
While many celebrities choose to keep their personal beliefs behind closed doors, for Kanye West, the line between life, spirituality, and art is often blurred. The rapper recently demonstrated that timeless truth once again, after he reportedly filed a trademark for the launch of a clothing line called Sunday Service.
According to WWD (via Us Weekly), West filed the trademark for the name “Sunday Service.” The US Patent and Trademark Office lists the trademark, filed on July 19, as being owned by Mascotte Holdings, Inc., West’s intellectual property holding company; its records indicate that the brand’s goods are “Bottoms as clothing; dresses; footwear; headwear; jackets; loungewear; scarves; shirts; socks; and tops as clothing.”
Per Us, the inspiration behind Sunday Service is West’s weekly worship service, which features West singing gospel-inspired renditions of his songs alongside a choir, and which have included attendees such as Katy Perry, Chance the Rapper, and Donald Glover. West brought this concept to his performance at Coachella on Easter Sunday of this year--where he sold merchandise including hoodies, sweatpants, and ponchos, sparking the first rumors of the Sunday Service line.
Previously, West has commented upon the influence of Christianity and biblical texts upon his aesthetic philosophy, explaining in an interview with Forbes that a verse from the Book of Leviticus had inspired the design of his clothing, saying that “the Bible is better than Pinterest” for inspiration.
While we don’t know that West’s brand of spirituality is necessarily the same as our own, we’re glad that he’s getting the opportunity to express it--and we’ll be keeping an eye on the Sunday Service line to see whether it lives up to his philosophy or not.
