Kathleen Kennedy Hints at the End of 'Star Wars' Trilogies After 'The Rise of Skywalker'
This week, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will premiere, closing the book on 42 years of storytelling that generations of fans have grown up with. With the ending of the Skywalker Saga on the horizon, as well as the current trilogy, fans and filmmakers alike have been in a slight panic, asking themselves what is next for a galaxy far, far away.
As it turns out, what is next is replacing the old with the new. Gizmodo reports that Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy recently sat down with the Los Angeles Times, and explained what she and the other big wigs at the studio have in store for the fandom, first stating:
“What we’ve been focused on these last five or six years is finishing that family saga around the Skywalkers. Now is the time to start thinking about how to segue into something new and different. We’re literally making this up from whole cloth and bringing in filmmakers to find what these stories might be. It can take a while before you find what direction you might want to go. We need the time to do that.”
Though there is still a lot of uncertainty, Kennedy shared that one decision has definitely been confirmed: trilogies aren't priority. She added, “I think it gives us a more open-ended view of storytelling and doesn’t lock us into this three-act structure. We’re not going to have some finite number and fit it into a box. We’re really going to let the story dictate that.”
While all this change can be disorienting, Kennedy assures us that we will still see familiar faces along the way; which faces survive the end, however, will be revealed this week.
