Kevin Feige Finally Explains Why 'Spider-Man: Far From Home' Concludes Phase 3 of the MCU
Prior to Avengers: Endgame hitting theaters, many Marvel fans were under the impression that the final Avengers film would also be the final film of the MCU’s Phase 3. The record-breaking blockbuster saw the end to multiple storylines, even including the heartbreaking death of the first superhero in the MCU. But it was soon announced that Spider-Man: Far From Home, the next film to premiere after Endgame, would actually be the movie to close out Phase 3. While fans have found this confusing, considering Spider-Man will be featured in Phase 4, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has just explained why they made this choice.
In a featurette for Far From Home, as reported by ComicBook.com, Feige explained that the two final Avengers films and the Spider-Man sequel had to be a package deal. He stated:
“We've been working for many years on Infinity War and Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home. Those were the films that were culminating the entire Infinity Saga of the MCU. And as we were working on Endgame we realized that the true end of the entire Infinity Saga, the final film of Phase 3, had to be Spider-Man: Far From Home, because, spoiler, we lose Tony Stark at the end of Endgame.”
Because Spider-Man had been so heavily influenced by his mentor, Iron Man, Marvel Studios believed it was important to conclude Phase 3 with the Queens-native reacting to Tony’s death, and ultimately learning from his legacy. Feige continued:
“The relationship between Peter Parker and Tony Stark is so special over the five films that Tom Holland has portrayed Spider-Man in the MCU, that we needed to see where his journey went, and see how does Spider-Man step out of the shadow of his mentor, Tony Stark, and become the true hero that he was always meant to be. And it's for that reason that Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home are essentially two pieces of the same story, and it's not over yet until Spider-Man: Far From Home.”
Announced MCU films which will likely take up Phase 4 of the MCU include Black Panther 2, Black Widow, Captain Marvel 2, and Doctor Strange 2, among others. As for Spidey’s next outing after his sequel, star Tom Holland reportedly signed on for a six-film contract, meaning he’ll appear in at least one more movie after Far From Home. You can catch him in the upcoming film when it hits theaters June 2.
