While Kim Kardashian West was not in attendance at the 2019 State of the Union, one very special guest was, who is linked to the 38-year-old star. Alice Marie Johnson, who was granted clemency this past June by Donald Trump, was a guest of honor at the Tuesday night event.
Johnson, who was released from prison after Kim advocated on her behalf as a part of her prison reform work, was seated alongside Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner. During his speech, Trump spoke of Alice’s release.
"I heard through friends the story of Alice Johnson. I was deeply moved… Alice’s story underscores the disparities and unfairness that can exist in criminal sentencing and the need to remedy this total injustice,” Trump said. "When I saw Alice’s beautiful family greet her at the prison gates hugging and kissing and crying and laughing, I knew I did something right.”
Trump wasn’t the only one to give Johnson a shout out. On Wednesday, Kim quote-tweeted a fan who was celebrating Johnson’s recognition. On Twitter, Kim wrote, “So proud!!! @AliceMarieFree at the SOTU!!!!"
Later on, Kim retweeted a message from Johnson, who announced her new book After Life, which will include a foreword from Kim.
"My life has forever changed because of Alice Marie Johnson," Kim said in a statement. "Her story is a gift that will now reach so many millions more through her book and film. I hope Alice's case is just the beginning of a movement to help those left behind. I am invested in continuing to support Alice and this cause."
After Life: My Journey From Incarceration to Freedom will be available May 21, 2019.
