Kim Kardashian Slammed With Cultural Appropriation Accusations Yet Again With New Braids Post on Instagram
Unfortunately, it seems like cultural appropriation is becoming a pattern in the Kardashian-Jenners' social media world. While people are not shy to call out the stars in comments and posts, it doesn't stop the famous family from continually posting images that feature themselves utilizing or wearing styles from cultures not their own. So at this point, we have to ask... is it a power move? Or do they genuinely not care?
This time around it's Kim Kardashian's turn yet again to be under fire for posting a series of throwback photos from a shoot done with Vanessa Beecroft, an Italian artist who has worked with Kanye West on both his fashion movements and his operas. In the post below, Kim wears Fulani braids and a dress with no sleeves. As Cosmopolitan reports, followers were not happy to see the mom-of-four with that hairstyle.
"Take them braids out you are white sweetie," onee wrote, while another said, "White girls wanna be black so bad." A third added, You're white," followed by someone else who wrote in all caps, "YOU ARE NOT BLACK."
This is hardly the first time Kim has worn these braids and showed them off on social media. In fact, a quick scroll through her Instagram will show multiple photos of her with the same exact hairstyle. She's even worn braids to public events, such as the MTV Movie & TV Awards in 2018. However, that time, the businesswoman came with an explanation, stating, "I actually did that look because North said she wanted braids and asked if I would do them with her. So we braided her hair and then we braided my hair," referring to her daughter.
It seems at this point like an exercise in futility. The Kardashian-Jenners continue to post material that is rooted in cultural appropriation and while people call them out on it in the comments, they still employ fashion choices from other people's cultures. Their power and their fanbase seem to remain unshakable, so will it ever really stop? Doubt it.
