'Luke Cage' Showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker Wants to Make a 'Star Wars' Film
The last film of the 42-year-old saga, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, is finally out in the world, which means that the future of the franchise is entering into a very strange chapter. As the studio pumps the breaks on trilogies and gives attention to live-action shows like The Mandalorian, it is unclear what is next for films. But, if one thing is for sure, it's that they need more diversity as they move forward.
Luckily for them, writer, producer, and director Cheo Hodari Coker would like to take on challenge. ComicBook.com reports that the Luke Cage showrunner recently expressed his interest in the task on Twitter, replying “I’d love to do one” to a tweet that stated, “Let’s have someone who isn’t a white male director do a Star Wars film for once.”
The Notorious writer also recently revealed earlier this year that he would like to create a spinoff featuring Samuel L. Jackson's Mace Windu. He stated at the time on Twitter (per ComicBook.com):
“I find myself thinking about Mace Windu. He told Yoda from the very beginning that Anakin was dangerous, with too much power, anger, and little restraint. Losing his limbs and that fall shouldn't have killed him. What would he be doing? Would he be an original architect of the Rebel Alliance?”
According to a report last year from Variety (prior to The Rise of Skywalker), in the little over four-decade franchise, 24 people had been hired as writers, directors, or creative leaders for the 17 Star Wars films; of those people, 23 were white men, and one was a white woman. There has never been a person of color in those positions.
Lucasfilm and Disney should a major New Year’s resolution to work on, and it seems that Cheo Hodari Coker is ready to help them accomplish it.
