Marvel's 'Jessica Jones' and 'The Punisher' Cancelled by Netflix

The time we've all been dreading has finally come. Netflix has cancelled its remaining Marvel TV shows, leaving fans disappointed but not surprised.

Deadline reports today that both Jessica Jones and The Punisher have been axed by the streaming service. This follows upsetting cancellations of Iron Fist, Luke Cage, and absolute fan-favorite Daredevil. While The Punisher just debuted its second season in January, Jessica Jones' third season has been completed and will reportedly still premiere on Netflix this year.

“Marvel’s The Punisher will not return for a third season on Netflix,” Netflix told Deadline. “Showrunner Steve Lightfoot, the terrific crew, and exceptional cast including star Jon Bernthal, delivered an acclaimed and compelling series for fans, and we are proud to showcase their work on Netflix for years to come."

“In addition, in reviewing our Marvel programming, we have decided that the upcoming third season will also be the final season for Marvel’s Jessica Jones,” the statement continued. “We are grateful to showrunner Melissa Rosenberg, star Krysten Ritter and the entire cast and crew, for three incredible seasons of this groundbreaking series, which was recognized by the Peabody Awards among many others."

Fans are now desperate to find out what this means for the future of the beloved Marvel shows, as it's very possible they aren't gone for good. Just last week, Hulu’s senior vice president of originals Craig Erwich weighed in on the possibility of the axed shows moving to the Netflix competitor. “Marvel has a ton of titles we’d be interested in," Erwich told The Wrap. “It kind of just depends on when they’re ready, [and] who, most importantly, is going to be behind these things.”

While we're sure another company will be reviving the shows at some point, it wouldn't happen for a few years, however. Netflix and Marvel’s agreement states that the characters of Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and Jessica Jones cannot show up in "any non-Netflix series or film for at least two years after cancellation," according to Variety.

Whatever does end up happening, it still doesn't change the fact that countless fans are heartbroken over these cancellations.
