Meghan Markle and Prince Harry welcome baby daughter and give her a name that honours Queen Elizabeth

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have welcomed their baby daughter, and the first sibling of Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, two, into the world on Friday, June 3 in California, with the former Duke and Duchess announcing the joyous news on Sunday, June 6.

The Duchess of Sussex gave birth to a beautiful baby girl weighing 7lb 11oz, and gave her a sweet and sentimental name, "Lilibet 'Lili' Diana Mountbatten-Windsor."

Lili is named after her great-grandmother Queen Elizabeth - who was affectionately nicknamed Lilibet by her family - and her grandmother, the late Princess Diana.

A statement from the couple's press secretary said: "It is with great joy that Prince Harry and Meghan, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, welcome their daughter, Lilibet "Lili" Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, to the world.

"Lili was born on Friday, June 4 at 11.40am in the trusted care of the doctors and staff at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara, California.

"She weighed 7lbs 11oz. Both mother and child are healthy and well, and settling in at home.

"Lili is named after her great-grandmother, Her Majesty The Queen, whose family nickname is Lilibet. Her middle name, Diana, was chosen to honour her beloved late grandmother, The Princess of Wales.

"This is the second child for the couple, who also have a two-year-old son named Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor.

"The Duke and Duchess thank you for your warm wishes and prayers as they enjoy this special time as a family."

The family have been living in the US since they quit the royal family last year.

But Harry retained his place in the line of succession so Lilibet will be eighth in line to the throne.

The first seven places remain unchanged - the Prince of Wales, the Duke of Cambridge, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, Prince Louis, Harry, and Archie Mountbatten-Windsor.
