MTV's 'True Life: Obsessed With Being a Kardashian' Follows Three People Who Worship the Family
By Natalie Zamora
We all know a few people who are a bit too into the Kardashians (us included). Yet no matter how much we all love the famous family, there are definitely some fans who take it to the extreme. I don't mean following them on social and buying their products, but I mean actually drastically altering their lives to be more like Kim and her sisters.
According to TooFab, in a new episode of MTV's True Life, a reboot of the beloved docuseries which began in 1998, we follow the lives of three people who literally worship the Kardashians. And it's affecting their lives.
Graysen, 21, is letting his obsession with wanting to be like Kim come between him and his husband.
"I know it's kind of cliché that I kind of look like Kim and then married a black guy," Graysen shares. "I feel like every relationship goes through changes. I never really thought me and my husband would go dress shopping together. When Jaquan and I met, I was really masculine. In the last five years, I've really started embracing the Kardashian feel and the Kardashian vibe, but it's pretty difficult for Jaquan because he's a gay man. You're not attracted to women."
Brittany, 20, is unemployed and spends all day trying to look like Kim. "Social media is the most important thing in my life," Brittany says. "People actually come up to me and they're like, 'You know who you remind me of?' And I'm like, 'Who?!' And they're like, 'Don't get upset, but Kim Kardashian.'" This causes conflict with her mother.
"I don't see you going on auditions. I see you taking hella selfies," her mom tells Brittany. "And if you wanna be famous, you gotta work on some type of a craft." The obsession with Kim also comes between Brittany and her friends.
And Sherrah, 26, is a single mom, but her son lives with her mother, because Sherrah is too busy "working towards our future: our Kardashian lifestyle."
"The Kardashians have become the idea of what beauty is, so I feel pressured to have a big butt or have fake boobs because this is what society deemed as beauty," Sherrah says. "My Brazilian butt lift cost me about $10,000. And $700 for my lips. To be complete, I need to spend like another $100,000. I've been following them since I realized that you could make a million-dollar empire off of a sex tape."
Psychologist Dr. Cooper Lawrence is interviewed for the episode, where she explains Celebrity Worship Syndrome as an "unhealthy relationship with a celebrity." These three people's obsession with Kim and the rest of the Kardashians is clearly negatively impacting their lives.
"One of the tenets of Celebrity Worship Syndrome is the belief that you and the celebrity are gonna be friends. It's simply untrue, but you've convinced yourself that it is true," Dr. Cooper Lawrence states. "It's part of the unhealthy part of it where a delusion has set in."
We all love celebrities, but we have to remember that the Kardashians should simply be fun to watch, and they shouldn't take over our lives.
