Original Darth Maul Voice Actor Peter Serafinowicz Was Cut From 'Solo: A Star Wars Story'

Darth Maul is one of those infamous characters who never dies, even though he got chopped in half in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. He’s become sort of a fan-favorite villain, and since his death in the first prequel many have rallied to bring him back. It wasn't until recently that he started to pop up in animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels, plus a shocking cameo in Solo: A Star Wars Story.
When fans saw Maul on the big screen again they were excited he was somehow back, but what they likely didn’t realize was that he was being voiced by Sam Witwer instead of Peter Serafinowicz, the original voice of the villain.
Serafinowicz actually did record a voiceover for Maul to be used in the 2018 film, but it was cut and later replaced with Witwer. In a recent interview with Collider, Serafinowicz explained he was approached by Lucasfilm to do the voice again, which he accepted. So happy to take on the gig, he recalled even planning to take his family to the premiere to surprise them with his part in the film. However, Lucasfilm emailed him later to let him know he had been replaced.
Serafinowicz was no doubt bummed he got cut without any warning. While Witwer’s voice was great in the movie, many fans would’ve definitely preferred the original. It likely would’ve been the last time we’d get to hear Serafinowicz’s voice as Maul, considering Lucasfilm is concluding the Skywalker Saga with the upcoming Episode IX.
