'Phoenix Nights' Star Paddy McGuinness Hints at a Third Season
It might be 2019, but it is also the decade of remakes and reboots. In the last few years we have seen cult-classics from the '90s and early 2000s ride gallantly back into our hearts: the Spice Girls got back together (minus Victoria Beckham), The Lion King was remade (and with Beyoncé, no less), and Are You Afraid of the Dark premiered a miniseries last month. And now, Britain’s own cult-series Phoenix Nights might be returning to the small screen.
LAD Bible reports that Paddy McGuinness, who played Patrick O’Shea on the show, recently sat down with The Daily Star and was asked if he could ever see the show making a comeback. The 46-year-old actor replied enthusiastically, "There's always talk about doing another one...It's just time, it's just getting everyone together. But everyone is up for it."
As you remember, Phoenix Nights, written by Peter Kay, Dave Spikey, and Neil Fitzmaurice, ran for two wildly successful seasons in 2001-2002. Despite the show’s success, it allegedly ended after Peter Kay ultimately favored the spinoff series, Max and Paddy’s Road To Nowhere.
The hilarious series followed the misfortunes of club owner Brian Potter (Kay) as he tried to revive his career in the world of club management. Though it only lasted for 11 episodes, it became cult classic, so much so that when the cast reunited in Manchester in 2015 for 16 performances, they sold out the Manchester Arena and raised around £5m for Comic Relief, reportedly the most money raised by a live comedy show in the world. McGuinness added about the success of the reunion, "We did do it live and that went really well, we sold out five nights playing to 15,000 people a night and that were great."
While it is unclear if there is any truth to McGuinness’ statement or if he is just “getting the word” like Clinton, one can only hope to see The Phoenix Club back up and running once again.
