'Riverdale's Mädchen Amick Turned Down the Role of Carrie Bradshaw in 'Sex and the City'
By Jennifer Fabiano
Riverdale fans know Mädchen Amick as the over-protective mother of Betty Cooper, and many others recognize her as Shelly Johnson in the classic series Twin Peaks (1990-1991), but the actress was also once offered the role of another iconic television character, Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and the City.
“I was offered Sex and the City because it was a spin-off from a character I played on 'Central Park West' (Carrie Fairchild). My kids were so young I didn’t feel like I could do another hour show,” Amick admitted to the Page Six. “Now in hindsight, I probably should have taken Sex and the City but its OK Sarah Jessica [Parker] was just brilliant in it so it was her vehicle for sure,” she said.
Amick also missed out on another role that would have turned her into an unforgettable television mom- Lorelai Gilmore. “I was almost cast in Gilmore Girls but the network felt that I didn’t look old enough to be a parent,” she said. Lauren Graham was later cast in the role.
While Amick regrets not taking the Sex and the City role, it turns out she wasn’t the only actress who said no to Carrie Bradshaw.
Dana Delany, who played Katherine Mayfair in Desperate Housewives, turned down the role after already working on multiple projects involving sex. Lisa Edelstein had a contract drawn up to play Carrie, but ultimately lost the role to Sarah Jessica Parker. And Kristin Davis, who ended up playing Charlotte York in the show, originally auditioned for the role of Carrie.
Regardless of Amick's past roles, we love seeing her as Alice Cooper in our favorite crazy town of Riverdale.
