Robert Pattinson Admits He Doesn't See Batman as a Hero

Robert Pattinson has become quite a chameleon in Hollywood. He got his start in huge franchises like Harry Potter and Twilight, but since then, has focused on reinventing himself in indie films. But just when we think we have him pegged, he goes and gets cast for Matt Reeves’ The Batman.

So why would the 33-year-old actor, who has avoided large, multi-million dollar franchises since his time as Edward Cullen, decide to don Batman’s mask? According to the New York Times, it is because he finds the character a little “off.”

The British actor sat down with the publication recently to discuss his newest film The Lighthouse, as well as The Batman. In the interview, he is asked why he wants to play a hero when he has stated that he is skeptical of any actor who wants to play one.

Pattinson replied, “Batman’s not a hero, though. He’s a complicated character. I don’t think I could ever play a real hero — there’s always got to be something a little bit wrong. I think it’s because one of my eyes is smaller than the other one.”

Though it would be a natural reaction for the DC fandom to cling to Pattinson’s anti-hero statement as a clue into what the film is about, The King star says we shouldn’t. He admitted, “I just fear that when I say anything about Batman people online are like, ‘What does this mean?’ And I don’t know!”

That makes, well, all of us. All we do know about the film is that Pattinson is the Caped Crusader, Zoë Kravitz will take on the role of Catwoman, and Paul Dano was just announced as the Riddler. Though the details are sparse, fans couldn’t be more excited to see these actors bring our favorite (not) superheroes to life. The Batman is due out in theaters June 25, 2021.
