Skyrim Players Poke Fun at 'Game of Thrones' Coffee Cup Mistake With New Mod
By Ryan Carroll
Game of Thrones’ final episode may have aired, but discussion of the series has persisted--especially about one of the series’ most prolific gaffes: a coffee cup left on set that eventually made it to the screen. Though HBO has tried to quiet the criticism through digital editing, multiple members of the Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim community have immortalized the error, creating different mods that replace cups in the game with coffee cups.
According to Mashable, an initial joking request for a Game of Thrones cup mod was placed in the SkyrimMods community on Reddit, proposing to add a coffee cup to the palace in the city of Dragonsreach. Subsequently, a number of users created different variations of the idea, all based on replacing existing drinks with coffee cups.
One mod simply added a single cup to the palace in Dragonsreach, as well as the palace in Solitude, another major city. Another, called Skyland Coffee, took it a step further, replacing every cup and tankard in the game with coffee cups in the style of Starbucks.
The enduring discussion of the cups comes after eagle-eyed viewers watching Game of Thrones Season 8 Episode 4, “The Last of the Starks,” spotted a modern coffee cup left onset. It’s unclear who left the cup there, though it has been confirmed that it was a cup from craft services, not Starbucks, despite the company’s humorous remark about the event on Twitter. Subsequently, others spotted a water bottle in a scene during the finale.
In any case, as the Skyrim mods demonstrate, the conversation about Game of Thrones and its controversial finale will not end anytime soon. What started as a single misplaced cup may soon grow into an entire artistic movement.
