Sophie Turner Explains That Controversial Sansa Line in 'Game of Thrones'
By Hannah Wigandt
Sophie Turner has been very vocal lately about fan backlash surrounding this final Game of Thrones season, and her characters decisions in it. Now she's putting one controversial moment in a recent episode to rest.
Ever since Season 8 Episode 4, "The Last of the Starks," fans and even Turner's Dark Phoenix co-star, Jessica Chastain, have been talking about the scene between Sansa and The Hound, where it's explained that everything Sansa went through made her as powerful as she is now. The scene seemed to imply that she needed to be abused to build character. But Turner is here to clarify her character's words.
Turner told The New York Times, "I obviously think that's not a message to spread. But I don't think that was the intention."
"It was that she was strong in spite of all of the horrific things that she's gone through, not because of them," she continued. "She's had resilience since the very beginning, and despite all of these awful things that happened to her, she's kept that resilience.
"Sansa to the core is resilient and brave and strong, and that had nothing to do with her abusers," Turner concluded.
In the same interview, Turner also commented on the petition to have the final season redone. She called it "disrespectful" to the writers and the crew who worked so hard on the show.
