'Spider-Man' Stars Tom Holland and Jake Gyllenhaal Reveal Their Favorite Superhero Movies
By Ryan Carroll
Spider-Man: Far From Home premiered this week to rave reviews, with fans being captivated by the first jaunt into a post-Avengers: Endgame Marvel Universe--and in particular, the chemistry between stars Tom Holland and Jake Gyllenhaal has stood out as a widely acclaimed element. This week, the two actors took an introspective turn, sharing their own favorite superhero films.
In an interview with IMDb, Holland and Gyllenhaal are asked about their favorite superhero movies, and they quickly begin to rack their brains--with Holland being quicker than Gyllenhaal. Holland, for his part, cited Chronicle, Iron Man ("No one in the history of movies should ever try to play Tony Stark ever again [after Robert Downey Jr."], and Thor: Ragnarok.
Gyllenhaal began by jokingly ruminating: “Is Care Bears a superhero action movie? It's one of my favorites.” Subsequently, however, he returned with glowing praise for Deadpool. “You can just clearly see Ryan Reynolds do something that is wholly and uniquely his own while at the same time fulfilling, like, all the things that all the comic book lovers love," he stated. "That is really hard to do...it’s close to impossible."
Holland and Gyllenhaal also discussed one of the most influential comic book movies of all time, Tim Burton’s Batman, which starred Holland’s Spider-Man: Homecoming co-star Michael Keaton. Keaton, Gyllenhaal remarked, “was able to make fun of the character and still be badass at the same time.” Holland said that he had not seen the film (it predates his birth by nine years), but remarked that Keaton’s role as Batman did come up in bloopers and deleted scenes from Homecoming.
We’re glad to see that Holland and Gyllenhaal have such in-depth understanding of what it takes to appear in a superhero film--and, more than that, we love their charisma together. To see it for yourself, check out Spider-Man: Far From Home, in theaters now.
