We're all hyped to see what happens to the Hawkins gang when Stranger Things Season 3 premieres on July 4. The future is uncertain for some of our favorite characters such as Eleven, Sheriff Hopper, Will, Mike and many more.

However, early on in the creative stages of the Netflix series, there were plans for the show to be an anthology with each season having a different storyline, and thus fans would not see their favorite characters develop for more than one season.

In an Oct. 2016 interview with Wired, Stranger Things' showrunners Matt and Ross Duffer explained that, early on, they contemplated the idea of crafting the show as an anthology series, similar to American Horror Story and Fargo.

"That’s how we conceived of it. It was right in that period where people in television were really into the idea," Matt said. However, as the Duffer brothers noticed the anthology model was beginning to lose some steam, they changed course.

"So we adapted. I think if we were a year earlier...," Matt continued before Ross added, "Maybe it would have ended up as an anthology."

However, the duo is happy that they followed a different model, especially since the show's cast meshed perfectly together.

"Now I’m really happy that it isn’t, because we found these kids that clicked," Matt said. "It would become a problem if we just continued to treat it like a TV show and just kept going for like seven seasons or something, but if we get out after four seasons or something, then I don’t think it’s going to feel that way."

No one knows exactly how many seasons the series will last, but we know there will be at least four, like Matt has speculated. Regardless of when it ends, however, we're happy the showrunners decided to let the show have a consistent storyline so we could see the likes of Sheriff Hopper and Steve Harrington grow into fan-favorites.
