The Heartfelt Goodbye Gift the Cast and Crew of 'The Office' Gave to Steve Carell
Steve Carell and subsequently Michael Scott's departure from Dunder Mifflin was definitely a turning point for The Office. The wacky shenanigans in Scranton just weren't the same without him, even though the series continued for another two seasons after his exit. In a 2011 Entertainment Weekly interview, showrunner Greg Daniels opened up about Carell's final moments as the World's Best Boss and the sweet send-off he received from his co-stars and the crew.
"He’s a hockey player so one of the things we gave him was a hockey jersey with his number on the call sheet on it — it was one — which was retired. The way they retire a guy’s number. We made a little ceremony out of it," Daniels explained.
Daniels said that one of the great aspects of working with Carell was his flexibility. "He taught me a lot about improv… When you see him roll with stuff that happens that’s not what he expected, that was very inspirational," Daniels said. "[Steve] maintained his creativity under amazing stress...I was like, “Wow, that’s cool. That guy is comfortable in a level of chaos that I am not.""
