You'd think that you would have to be a Star Wars fan to want to play a role in a Star Wars series, right? Well, that's apparently wrong, because The Mandalorian actor Werner Herzog just revealed he's never even seen a single film from a galaxy far, far away.

The original Star Wars series garnered basically as much attention as the films do now--everyone saw them. So when Herzog told the Associated Press he'd never seen any Star Wars movie, even though he was alive when they hit theaters, it was extremely shocking to fans.

“I have to confess I never saw a single one," the 76-year-old actor admitted. "I’ve seen some trailers, I’ve seen some excerpts here and there. And I know about the whole franchise and about the toys for the kids, and so... it’s all a new mythology of a time of some sort of heroics, and it has created new mythologies, and you better take them seriously. Yes, they’re out there, and don’t ignore them.”

Maybe Herzog was too focus on his own projects such as Grizzly ManFitzcarraldo, and Aguirre, the Wrath of God, to notice some of the most influential sci-fi films of all time. But if he never saw the Star Wars series, how did he land a part in the new Disney+ series? Apparently, producer Jon Favreau thought he was perfect for the role.

"The Mandalorian, I was invited by Jon Favreau — who started this whole series — to act,” Herzog admitted. “I looked at the screenplays and I had the feeling, although I know very little about Star Wars, I had the feeling yes, I could do it. It’s a character in whom you cannot trust. And I said yes, I can do that.”

We'll see how Herzog pulled it off in The Mandalorian when Disney+ debuts on Nov. 12.
