Since the premiere of Iron Man in 2008, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has expanded its roster from one over-the-top hero to include ancient gods, intergalactic tyrants, and dimension-hopping scientists. But recently, there have been suggestions for another titan to join the ranks of the MCU: Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who this week responded positively to the suggestion that he could play himself in the franchise.
Johnson’s acceptance comes after Anthony Russo, the co-director of Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, was asked whether or not the actor could ever appear in the MCU, to which Russo responded that “The superhero that I would most like The Rock to play is The Rock” (via ScreenRant). On Twitter, Johnson leaped at the idea, saying “I was born to play this role. Literally. I’ll call you tonight Russo Bros!!! Time to rule the MCU.. forever.”

While there is currently no talk of Johnson appearing in a Marvel Studios film, it would not be the first celebrity cameo in the MCU, with Matt Damon appearing in Thor: Ragnarok in a brief, humorous role.
In the meantime, Johnson is set to portray Shazam villain/anti-hero Black Adam in an upcoming film, which, according to ComicBook.com, recently picked up Jaume Collet-Serra (The Shallows, Orphan, Non-Stop) as director. While few individuals have worked with both the MCU and the DC Extended Universe, there are some exceptions--notably James Gunn, the director of Guardians of the Galaxy and the upcoming The Suicide Squad, and Idris Elba, who played Heimdall in the MCU and who will appear in an undisclosed role in The Suicide Squad.
In any case, we’re glad to see the Johnson enthusiasm for playing himself come to life. While there doesn’t seem to be much solid evidence that a The-Rock-as-The-Rock cameo will happen, it gives our imaginations plenty to work with.
