The hype surrounding the upcoming movie Joker has been unlike anything we've seen from a DC film in years. After the last batch of movies from the comic book franchise, such as the DCEU's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, it kind of seemed like Oscar buzz wouldn't happen for DC again. But now, after Joker premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, that all changed. And naturally, fans have been wondering if sequels could be in the future.

Director Todd Phillips addressed the idea of a sequel back in August, claiming that if star Joaquin Phoenix was interested, "he and I could think of something pretty cool." Of course, we all took this as a solid possibility, but now Phillips is backtracking a bit and clarifying the actual situation.

IndieWire reports that according to IGN, Phillips stated at a post-screening reception in Los Angeles that, "We have no plans for a sequel," adding, "The quote was, 'I will do anything Joaquin wants to do.' And I would. But the movie’s not set up to [have] a sequel. We always pitched it as one movie, and that's it." The director also stated that the news circulating his original quote was "annoying."

Well, there you have it. While we're sure Joker will earn enough money to grant a sequel, we have a feeling it'll be great just as a standalone.
