Twitter Reacts After 'GoT' Showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss Drop Out of 'Star Wars' Trilogy
Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are kind of having a rough year. First, the world erupted with criticism after they concluded the hard-hitting HBO show with one of the most divisive series finales in history. It was also announced that the pair was chosen to take on the next chapter of Star Wars with a new trilogy, which was not received well with fans of a galaxy far, far, away. Petitions were even made to get the duo dropped from the series.
But now, Deadline reports that the pair has “given up” the opportunity, blaming their recent deal with Netflix and scheduling conflicts as the cause.
You would think fans would be overwhelmingly relieved, and most are, but unfortunately, the directorial duo can’t catch a break even after departing the series. Upon hearing the news, Twitter users have begun dragging Weiss and Benioff even more, and some of it is pretty catty.
Some brought up the fact that Benioff and Weiss recently admitted at the Austin Film Festival that they weren't experienced prior to taking on Game of Thrones, joking this led to them being fired. (We'll point out that no reports suggest they were fired, but of course some will assume so).
One user wrote, “It’s nice of Lucasfilm and [Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy] to let Weiss and Benioff pretend that they want to work for Netflix instead of how they got s**t canned from the biggest franchise in entertainment. I hope they never work again.”
Another posted, “As if #GameOfThrones fans needed another reason to hate David Benioff and DB Weiss - they apparently left the Star Wars series they were slated to work on. The one that that made them push the end of GoT into the dirt.”
Others are too busy celebrating the news to criticize the duo any longer.
While Benioff and Weiss seem amicable with Disney about the dissolved deal in their press releases, I don’t think the internet is going to be kind to the duo for a long time to come.
