Two Major Characters Almost Ended Up Together in 'Stranger Things' Season 3 [SPOILERS]
This article includes spoilers for Season 3 of 'Stranger Things.'
Steve “The Hair” Harrington, portrayed by Joe Keery, has had one of the most complex character developments on Stranger Things. In Season 1, he starts off as the jerk we hate for our girl, Nancy Wheeler. But by Season 3, he is the goofy big brother that we can’t help but love.
In the most recent season, Steve’s character deepens even more when he gets stuck in a crappy summer job with Robin, a new character played by Maya Hawke.
Robin is just the reality check Steve needs, so naturally he falls for her. But Robin breaks the news to Steve on a bathroom floor that the reason she was jealous of him was because a girl she had a crush on liked him when they were in high school.
Though this very sweet scene of Robin coming out to Steve has become a fan-favorite, it actually wasn’t always supposed to happen.
Seventeen reports that in an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Hawke explained the decision that Robin wouldn't end up with Steve was made gradually. "Throughout filming, we started to feel like she and [Steve] shouldn’t get together, and that she’s gay," the actress said. "Even when I go back and watch earlier episodes, it just seems like the most obvious decision ever."
Hawke also explained to Variety that the final call on Robin’s sexuality didn’t happen until Episode 4 or 5, and it was a collaborative decision between her and the Duffer Brothers, the creators of the series.
Hawke also shared that she hopes that Robin being gay “made a difference.”
“If I can hope for anything it’s that maybe some people fell in love with Robin and that helped them fall in love with girls who love girls and boys who love boys,” the star sweetly shared.
Done and done.
