VIDEO: Jake Gyllenhaal Explains How Mysterio Gets to MCU Earth in 'Spider-Man: Far From Home'

Marvel fans are reeling after a new interview leading up to the release of Spider-Man: Far From Home has revealed more origin details about Mysterio, portrayed by Jake Gyllenhaal.

CBR reports that, while doing a press junket for the film, Gyllenhaal explained that Mysterio is actually from Earth, but in another dimension. He arrives on the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Earth via a rift in the space-time continuum caused from the use of the Infinity Gauntlet by Thanos.

Gyllenhaal explains:

“I follow one of the Elemental creatures through a rift in the space-time continuum and find myself on another Earth trying to fight this creature. What I don't know is that they sort of are expanding into different areas all over this Earth as they did on my Earth and I lost a lot on my Earth and sacrificed a lot fighting this one that led me to this Earth and find Nick Fury in the midst of battling this creature.”

The 38-year-old actor also states in the interview that when he was first introduced to Mysterio, he believed the character to be a villain--as did many fans. The director, Jon Watts, further explained Mysterio’s story and struggles, which Gyllenhaal thought was “an interesting take” on the character.

Gyllenhaal also took time in the interview to rave about his co-star, Tom Holland, saying that he “adores him.” He shared, “Tom is a deeply physical actor. His instincts come from the ground up, literally his feet up, and I am amazed by that…And he was a complete original.”

Fans will discover more about Mysterio’s origins in Spider-Man: Far From Home, opening July 2.
