VIDEO: Watch Naomi Watts Masterly Shut Down 'Game of Thrones' Prequel Questions
By Ryan Carroll
Though the finale of Game of Thrones aired just two months ago, many fans are already raring for another excursion into the world of Westeros, and have been searching for any hints they can about HBO’s upcoming prequel spinoff. This week, however, star Naomi Watts deflected the topic, shutting down questions from interviewer Jimmy Fallon about the show.
In a clip showing Watts’ recent appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon (via E! News), the TV host attempted to levy questions about the upcoming series, straight up saying, “Can we talk about the Game of Thrones prequel?...Are we not allowed to discuss anything?” Watts promptly responded with a flat “No.”
To deflect the question, Watts called out “Tequila, tequila, tequila,” cueing The Tonight Show’s band The Roots to play a rendition of The Champs song “Tequila.” After taking time to dance along to the song, Fallon and Watts returned to their seats, with Fallon commenting, "That's the way to get out of it," adding, "We won't talk about it, but I am very excited about it, and congrats.”
Previously, reports and information from George R.R. Martin have indicated that the prequel will be set thousands of years before Game of Thrones, during the Long Night, the last great battle against the White Walkers. Watts, starring alongside Denise Gough, Josh Whitehouse, and Jamie Campbell Bower, will play “a charismatic socialite hiding a dark secret.”
Despite our rabid curiosity about everything related to the spinoff series, we have to hand it to Watts--not everyone can execute a “Tequila” deflection, but when done right, it’s a masterful move.
