Wells Adams Drops Savage Tweet About Wanting to See Clare Crawley and Matt James Fight
By Lillian Marx
Matt James just made history as The Bachelor’s first-ever black lead. It’s a big move for the franchise, but not everyone is focused on the importance. In a savage tweet, Bachelor Nation alum Wells Adams said was excited about the casting, but what he really wants is more drama.
After the announcement was made on Good Morning America, Wells tweeted his thoughts. “Great move @BachelorABC!,” he wrote. “But also, I still wanna see Clare and Matt get into a fight night 1 about his Cameo account.”
Just in case you’ve been sleeping on your Bachelor content, let’s break that statement down.
Matt was originally cast in Clare Crawley’s season of The Bachelorette, which has been postponed in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. Unfortunately, that didn’t stop the two from getting into it online. It all started with a subtweet from Clare. “If you are doing interviews and creating Cameo accounts before you are even on my season…you are in it for the wrong reasons,” she wrote. Fans took that to be a jab at Matt, who had recently joined the fan-celeb video messaging platform Cameo. The thing is, Matt’s Cameo presence is all about his charity work.
According to Marie Claire, Matt indirectly responded to Clare’s shade in his Instagram Story, where he clarified that all of his Cameo earnings were going to the Robin Hood Foundation, a nonprofit that fights poverty in New York, which has recently been focused on COVID-19 relief.
The back-and-forth lead to a whole PR debacle for Clare, and for the Bachelor franchise. Clare tweeted that her original post had been about multiple contestants. Host Chris Harrison even made a lengthy statement to Entertainment Tonight, explaining, “Clare's not against charity, she's not against Matt doing charity,” but instead, “she's just saying she's living under a certain set of guidelines and rules because she's the Bachelorette.”
In other words, Matt and Clare were probably not meant to be. And, too bad for Wells, Entertainment Weekly has confirmed that Matt will not appear on The Bachelorette now that he's our leading man. Still, his season is bound to have plenty of its own drama.
