New photos promoting Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker have been released and they're causing many fans to think we haven't seen the last of Luke Skywalker alive and well.
As ComicBook.com reports, Vanity Fair debuted the series of photos which were shot by Annie Leibovitz, and among behind-the-scenes shots and new characters, there's a photo of Mark Hamill's Luke Skywalker alongside R2D2.

The last we saw of Luke, he was vanishing into the Force after astral projecting to distract Kylo Ren in The Last Jedi. The diversion proved to be too much from the Jedi Master, and he died...or so we thought? Leibovitz's photo below seems to show Luke fully alive, instead of as a Force ghost many fans thought he'd come back as in the upcoming film. Fans are now suspecting he'll be resurrected somehow.
Everyone talking about Knights of Ren & Keri Russell may have overlooked that this new Episode IX pic of Luke Skywalker is neither a force ghost nor the flashback Luke.

At the end of the day, however, fans shouldn't take the photos all too seriously, as they are just promotional photos, not actual scenes from the movie. And to be honest, do you really think Lucasfilm would give the okay to spoil a major plot point like this? Yeah, not likely.
We'll discover the truth behind Luke's fate when The Rise of Skywalker debuts on Dec. 20.
