Avengers: Endgame’s final battle was an epic climax to the past 11 years of Marvel Cinematic Universe films, seeing nearly every major hero unite to battle Thanos and his unstoppable army. One major character, however, was significant for not appearing in the scene: Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), whose absence was recently explained by co-screenwriter Christopher Markus.

While Fury was present during Tony Stark’s funeral, he was absent during the final battle for reasons related to storytelling, according to Markus. At San Diego Comic-Con earlier this month, according to CinemaBlend, Markus shared that it, “Was [because] we have such a traffic jam of heroes and so much power, that to have a guy who, in combat, would just be firing a gun... it doesn’t come off well for Nick Fury, frankly.”

Though characters such as the Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) also wielded guns during the final battle, they appeared only briefly and also boasted another superpower. As a result, as Markus says, Fury would likely have been swallowed up in the deluge of action.

Following Avengers: Endgame, Fury has appeared in Spider-Man: Far From Home, and is expected to appear in future Marvel films. Per CinemaBlend, Far From Home marks Fury’s tenth appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe--and introduces a new twist to the character, with Fury and Agent Hill (Cobie Smulders) enjoying a vacation while Skrulls Talos and Soren take their places on Earth.

While we certainly would’ve loved to see Fury make an appearance in the final battle of Endgame, it’s hard to imagine that he would’ve been terribly impactful alongside characters like Iron Man, Captain Marvel, and Thor.
