Why Patty Jenkins Chose the 1980s for 'Wonder Woman's Next Installment
With Wonder Woman's insane success at the box office back in 2017, it was a no brainer that the DC film would be getting a sequel. And as director Patty Jenkins and star Gal Gadot are both on board, fans are getting more and more excited to see what Diana Prince will be up to next in Wonder Woman 1984.
Jenkins has just opened up on the next film, which she doesn't consider a sequel, giving reason as to why she chose the 1980s as the setting for the next installment. Fans will remember the first film took place during World War I.
Per ComicBook.com, the award-winning director recently spoke to Deadline's Crew Call podcast, explaining, "1984 itself is definitely very evocative to what's important in that movie and resonates with right now ... it was the pinnacle of the success in the '80s." She continued on later, adding that there was "something about the excess of that period of time, which is so linked up to where we are in the world right now, that it's set there for a reason."
As vague as Jenkins' explanation may be, we're sure we'll be finding out exactly what she means when the film premieres. Apart from Gadot returning for the next installment, Pedro Pascal and Kristen Wiig will be joining the film, and Chris Pine is set to reprise his role as Steve Trevor. Wonder Woman 1984 hits theaters on June 5, 2020.
